Greenpeace UK is an independent national/regional organisation within the global Greenpeace campaigning network, which acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. The global network of Greenpeace organisations comprises 26 independent national/regional Greenpeace organisations with presence in over 55 countries across Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, as well as a coordinating and supporting organisation, Greenpeace International.OVERALL PURPOSE:
To diversify and expand Greenpeace UK’s earned media coverage beyond traditional print and broadcast, enabling our work to reach and engage new audiences in line with our audience strategy and wider organisational objectives. We are looking for candidates who has demonstrable experience of doing this.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Earned Media Diversification Strategy
- Support the Head of Press and Rapid Response in developing a media diversification strategy, in line with our audience strategy and wider organisational objectives
- Identify and pitch Greenpeace stories, campaigns and spokespeople for media partners beyond the daily news cycle - e.g. podcast producers, social-first video teams, digital influencers, digital-native publications, documentary makers.
- Lead delivery of activities in service of that strategy - e.g. setting up internal content-gathering channels, meeting with producers, measuring impact
- Work closely with our digital team to identify opportunities to collaborate with social-first accounts, key influencers and content creators
- Work with colleagues in the UK and overseas offices to co-develop compelling new ideas for features and other long-form content
- Contribute to robust monitoring and evaluation of content reach and impact against strategies
- Coordinate communication and engagement activities around the release of high-profile content featuring Greenpeace, such as documentaries
- Act as a point of expertise for colleagues on working with non-traditional media partners, sharing contacts and learning across the team.
- Support Greenpeace colleagues and partners to ensure accuracy, legal and reputational robustness of co-produced content.
- Build relationships & develop targeted partnerships with a diverse range of media creators and outlets, including those under-represented in mainstream UK media, to ensure Greenpeace stories reach and resonate with key audiences.
Press & Earned Media Delivery
- Coordinate and lead the delivery of media partnerships from initial pitch through to launch, working across internal teams and external producers.
- Build our spokespeople’s public profile by securing interview opportunities for them on podcasts, current affairs programmes and other channels
- Prepare and adapt a range of earned media materials (e.g. press releases, media briefings, partnership pitches) as required.
- Be deployed flexibly to multiple campaigns and rapid response opportunities as part of the agile press office.
- Ensure unified messages and brand alignment across earned media outputs.
- Work in multi-disciplinary contexts to ensure integrated campaign communications.
- Act as the contact point for Greenpeace International media staff as appropriate.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Listed below are the requirements needed to undertake this job. Selection of candidates will be based on the extent to which these requirements are met.
Earned Media Expertise
- Experience in media relations, PR, journalism, or comparable storytelling and distribution roles, with a proven ability to secure impactful coverage or partnerships.
- Experience in developing and pitching content for long-form and partnership-based media, as well as social-first or digital-native outlets.
- A good understanding of how campaigning organisations use news and social media content to achieve change
- Experience of assessing risk and making recommendations to senior staff.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the UK media landscape and the wider digital and global media ecosystems that shape UK narratives
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a network of media contacts, including producers and commissioning editors
- Proven ability to build relationships across teams/departments and work in multi-disciplinary contexts.
- Ability to work to briefs - quickly getting across new issues and strategies.
Communication
- Ability to write clear, concise, and compelling copy for different audiences (e.g. pitches, briefings).
- Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in face-to-face and remote meetings.
Organisational Skills
- Ability to manage and prioritise a varied workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain effective systems for tracking contacts and project progress.
Personal Qualities
- Knowledge of, and interest in, environmental issues.
- Self-motivated and able to act with a high level of initiative.
- A demonstrable commitment to anti-racist and inclusive practice, including amplifying diverse voices in media and ensuring accessibility of Greenpeace’s storytelling.
- Willingness to work on a wide variety of issues and occasional unsocial hours as required.
- Personal belief in and support for the aims and core values of Greenpeace.
- Must be interested in learning more about the principles of non-violent direct action (NVDA). It is mandatory for all Greenpeace UK employees to take part in a NVDA training day.
- Greenpeace is a non-party political organisation and it is important for its future that this should remain the case. It is, therefore, a condition of employment that employees shall not normally stand for any official position within a political party.
The role is based in the UK head office in North London and will be 2-3 days per week in the office, the rest from home.
