We were delighted to welcome Angel to Impact for a week of work experience through our long-standing partnership with Inspire.
Having worked alongside Inspire for many years, we are proud to support their mission of connecting young people with employers, helping them build confidence, develop valuable workplace skills and gain meaningful experience that can shape their future careers.
Throughout the week, it was fantastic to see Angel grow in confidence. She quickly came out of her shell, asked thoughtful questions and embraced every opportunity to learn, making her a valued member of the team.
Below, Angel shares her reflections on her time at Impact.
“My time spent at Impact was incredibly valuable. I got to meet an incredible variation of people, and I was exposed to the industry like never before. My expectations were exceeded, as my initial view of what I had thought a professional setting would be like was broken down, and I was able to see what it was really like to work here, in The City of London.
Impact’s message is clear, they are a purpose driven, people first, business. And the five pillars shown on their website were reflected to me during my time here. The most prominent was:
“Diversity and inclusivity in the media industry”
This pillar couldn’t have been made clearer to me, as I saw firsthand how Impact valued, and took the time to consider each candidate who came their way. In the current harsh market, where jobs are scarce and unemployment is high, Impact boasts a diverse and considerable number of candidates. To them, all that matters is your valuable work experience, not how well you did in school or how many people you know. This made Impact stand out to me, as it made me realise how much they cared about the people who chose to work with them.
One thing about my time here that impressed me, is that I was able to pick up aspects of working life I could apply to my future. For example, on multiple instances I was able to see how someone’s CV could affect their path. I learnt the correct way to format one. It became abundantly clear to me that even if you were the most qualified person for a role, if your CV was disorganised and careless, that reflected your character and showed your inability to fulfil a role. This made so much sense to me, as someone who was unable to put 100% of their effort into a job application, surely wouldn’t be able put much time or effort in to their position.
I was also able to learn the importance of tailoring your CV for the position you apply for. Each role, no matter how similar, is different. Therefore, I learnt it is incredibly important that each CV I put forward is relevant to the job I’m applying for, to make sure I give myself the best chance among the sea of candidates.
Put your best qualities in the spotlight, and don’t focus too much on the irrelevant ones.
Friendliness and a sense of community weren’t lacking in the office, as I experienced a warm welcome as soon as I arrived. I appreciated how all the members of impact laughed and joked together like a tight-knit family, and it showed how well they all worked together. It was reassuring, as I felt that candidates were right to put their trust in a team that had so much trust in each other.
Ultimately, my time at Impact London was short, but the insights were invaluable. The amount of hands-on experience I received in such a short time was extremely precious, and getting to spend time with industry professionals helped me get a glimpse of what my future could look like. Thank you for the team at impact for allowing me to work alongside you these 4 days.”
