Today is Autism awareness and although its late in the afternoon I do not want to let the day go without telling you how important this day is, and how proud I am of what it means to autistic people and their families.
Autism has no specific identity, and I really want to highlight and talk about the positive aspects of autism rather than dwelling on what is perceived to be the negative ones. Thinking about autism in more favourable terms will change your thought mentality which will then change your response towards someone with autism when you meet. My son Kayden is 11 years old and is going to secondary school every day on his own and the only thing I worry about is the public and whether people understand that he not like most, despite physically seeming like a good looking boy lol.
Thinking about the positive aspects of autism can change the opinion of a potential employer for an adult with autism opening doors to new opportunities, make the community more inclusive, and change how we support people with autism at home, school, and in the community. A positive approach will build strong relationships, which is the base for good development and quality of life.
Celebrate a different way of thinking and what that can add to the world we live in. x
